On Saturday Durham’s Central Park came to life with diversity and unity as local refugee resettlement agencies CWS and World Relief sponsored the area’s first Refugee Day. Uniting NC was one of a number of nonprofit organizations that joined in support of local refugee families. In addition to sharing information about our work, staff also sold “NC is home” shirts (with ‘home’ in 8 different languages) as a joint fundraiser for CWS, World Relief and Uniting NC. We also ran into many families who were proud to say they had a “Welcome to Durham Y’all” or “Welcome to Raleigh Y’all” sign planted in their yard. Families laughed and played while listening to music and enjoying delicious food — a wonderful celebration of new neighbors, new opportunities and all that we can learn from one another.
